first day

I survived my first day at the Writing Center. I saw three students, two of whom were graduate students. I read many application essays and resumes. I actually felt a little bit like an imposter going through these engineering resumes...what do I know about them? And I'm not supposed to be just a "grammar police" but actually help students work through ideas and talk about organization, sentence structure, etc, but how do you do that with an engineering resume? My first student was very stubborn and difficult; he basically challenged every suggestion that I made. Very frustrating. My next two were very pleasant; it was nice feeling like a useful and helpful person, someone who can actually contribute to others and the world. When working on my dissertation, all that I face are my inadequacies.
