studious on a saturday night
It's Saturday night, and people are hanging out at Kittoe, while I'm at home trying to finish up a novel for Monday's lecture. *sad* Usually I would be out, but since tomorrow afternoon and night I will be with Byron's extended family, I really only have tonight to catch up on the reading.
It's strange to be studying on the weekends--I haven't done that in years. Strange and sad, but also somewhat gratifying. I feel very productive and purposeful, knowing that I am keeping on schedule. This American masterpieces class that I am TA-ing for seems pretty intense, and I already feel somewhat behind since I've already missed the first week of lecture and it's not my field at all. I don't do American lit, and I especially don't know much about the twentieth-century.
My prof also seems to be much more hands-on than the previous ones I've worked with. She likes structure, wants to visit several sections, and wants them run in an orderly way. Which gives me more pressure. Not only do I have to catch up on a field that I don't know about, I also want to make sure I run the sections in a way that meets her standards of structure. *yikes* I am, nevertheless, pretty excited about working with her--she's amazingly smart and a very interesting person.
On a bright note, I've found the novel that we're reading for next week incredibly refreshing. I guess I had been stuck in the musty, long-windedness of the nineteenth-century for too long. Reading contemporary prose--it's so immediate, so limpid, so real. So fast to read. The novel is Tropic of Orange, by Karen Tei Yamashita, and it's set in L.A. and Mexico. I can recognize so many of the L.A. references, even a hair salon in Torrance! And each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character, whose lives somehow intertwine (I know, sounds like Crash, right, or Lost or any of the new shows out there? Well, this was published in 1997, so it pre-dates them all). Really, really interesting. It's getting me excited about literature again--what it can do, say, mean.
