l.a.
This is my belated post on the past weekend in LA to attend my grandmother's funeral.
Let's see, the highs:
-lots of time with family, especially seeing uncles and aunts from far away that I only see once every other year
-the funeral service itself was a real blessing and encouragement
-meeting with God and experiencing his presence at Newsong Irvine; spiritual breakthrough in an area I was struggling with
-eating Pinkberry three times in two days!
-hanging out with Joyce's friend Sarah in K-town and West LA
The lows:
-it was HOT, practically 100 degrees all three days we were there; the air literally did not move, even at night
-i guess the weather was the only low :)
My grandmother's memorial service was really nice. We had a viewing just for family the night before, where my dad's family spent most of the time taking pictures (a little weird, yeah). The memorial service spent a lot of time celebrating her life, with each of her children sharing. I even saw a video clip of my dad describing some childhood memories where he choked up! I've never seen that before.
I was really encouraged and challenged by my grandma's example. The portrait that emerged from everyone's remembrances was a woman who took God very seriously and took spiritual education very seriously. She spent so much time and effort training her kids in the way of God and also caring for our spiritual growth. Growing up, everytime I saw her, she would ask about my spiritual life and was very concerned whether we were walking with the Lord. You could tell that that was her priority in life--God--and not wealth or power or fame. It really showed in how she behaved towards us. She was also constantly praying, always asking for our prayer requests. It really challenged me in terms of how I live my life--whether my actions show that I take God and my spiritual growth as the priority in my life.
Yeah, so it was a really great weekend. On Sunday, I went with Joyce to Newsong and met up with my cousins again. Afterwards, we had brunch and then shared and prayed together. It was a really sweet time of fellowship. It's not often that we get to do this, but I was just so thankful to have family in the Lord.
As for my breakthrough, this is getting kinda long, so I'll save the spiritual post for another time.
