just wondering...
Joyce and I were chatting on the phone today, and she made an offhand remark about how I am a "girly girl," which got me thinking...what is a girly girl? Does it refer to a person's interests, personality, behavior, or some combination of all three?
Likewise, what is a "cute" girl--looks, interests, personality, behavior or a combination of all?
A "feminine" girl?
I don't deny being a girly girl, nor do I find it a bad thing, but the analytical part of me wants more precise vocabulary and specific descriptions (the nerd that I am). I'm hoping that through your responses I can gain some kind of common understanding of the conceptions out there. Maybe this will turn out to be a fruitless endeavor, since God created each person so uniquely that perhaps it's futile to try to categorize people into certain labels. Still, I'm curious.
So, what do you mean when you say a girl is girly, cute, or feminine?

On Urban dictionary:
girly = describes the sort of girl whose favorite color is pink and isn't afraid to flaunt it through her line of clothing. She is stereotyped with wearing long hair, skirts/dresses and that sorta girly stuff. Erm... as in Reese in Legally Blonde.
cute = used to describe 1) someone that is attractive in an innocent way; 2) someone or an act that's sweet, nice; 3) someone doing something silly, special
feminine = Of a woman. Traditionally, in most cultures, the expectation for a lady to be nurturing, demure, to care for her family, to look beautiful, and to be submissive to her husband.
But not all women are like that. More than enough women are strong, direct, and independent. What is feminine is what a woman does.
my personal take to follow...
Off the top of my head, I'd say girly is what is traditionally associated with younger women (i.e. liking pink, frills, princesses, etc.).
Feminine is a similar concept but perhaps the more mature version. Also, definitely someone who fits the stereotypical expectations of what a woman should be like (gentle, likes pretty things, nurturing, soft-spoken, etc.)
Cute describes personality more than looks, but is probably used to refer to someone who's pleasant to look at, but not a knock-out. Someone who's cute is friendly, smiley, a somewhat animated conversationalist and usually bubbly.
Um. What Shal said.
hmm... that is an interesting question. personally, i think that it can be a mix of personal interests and personality that makes a girl "girly," "cute," or "feminine."
this is can be a dangerous question to answer because we are playing on stereotypes, so i hope i don't offend anyone with my answers. however, i will answer your question :)
so, when i think of "girly" i am usually referring to her personal interest. she is someone who likes to do girly things (like scrapbooking for example). i usually think of liking girly colors is a part of that as well. also, i think a "girly girl" is pretty into their looks and fashion. i think of someone who isn't into sports and would rather sit on the side a look pretty because they don't want to break a nail or get their clothes dirty... but i'm not saying that is you ;) ... i also, think of them being more "dainty" if that is the right word.
when i think of "cute" i think it can be both looks and personality. i agree with shally that it is more personality than looks. it is how they act and hold themselves. i think the urban dictionary definition is what i usually think of as "cute."
and for "feminine," i jus think of girls in general. they are feminine. that's who they are. they like to do female things and act like girls. but, i guess it's not really something i really label someone with.
so yea... that's my take on "girly," "cute," and "feminine" :)
