packing

I can't believe we're leaving for Europe on Friday!

It still feels unreal. I think because we had to cancel our trip in 2006, I will always be a little wary of going until we actually get on the plane. But in the past week, the trip is becoming more of a reality, mostly because Byron is actually talking about it a lot more. He's been researching our train tickets, reading travel websites, making a packing list. It's really funny.

You have to understand, Byron and I are really different when it comes to planning trips. I'm very future-oriented, so I get the most excited when first conceiving of a vacation, setting aside the dates, deciding how many nights we'll spend where, planning accommodations. At that stage, it's almost like twisting his arm to get him to agree to go. But as the time gets closer to leave, he actually gets more into it than I do (I start to focus on all the things I need to get done before we leave). By the time we are on the plane, we are both at the same place in terms of excitement. :)

So we've had to decide what kind of "travel style" we want this vacation to be. In one of the first websites Byron perused, it recommended only bringing one set of clothing (besides the one you're already wearing) in a backpack, and handwashing every night. I was like, "Uh, NO." It's a 16-day trip: we're visiting Berlin, Prague, Brno, and Vienna. As much as I am for light traveling, I don't think I can survive on two sets of clothing for 2.5 weeks!

So we decided to each bring a carry-on, he'll carry a small backpack, and I'll carry a small duffle for our snacks and shoes (and for any souvenirs we decide to bring back). Byron is very much pushing for a "pack as light as possible" approach. We'll be traveling by train, bus, and metro in between the cities, so there will be a lot of dragging our suitcases over cobblestone streets, up and down the subway stairs, on and off the overhead luggage bins. Makes sense to go lighter, I guess. We've settled on something close to "student" style while still making sure we can enjoy the sights: be frugal on accommodations, frugal to moderate on eating, and spend most of our euros doing things (palaces, museums, tours, getting around town, etc).

I checked the weather and it looks very cold over there: highs in the 48-51F range! Chance of rain and snow! Brrrr. Now I need to go back and decide: five sweaters or six...? one jacket or two...?
