sad reality
This is the response I received today when I emailed my dream school to see if they had received the application I sent over a month ago:
Dear Ms. Wang,
Yes, all materials have been received. My apologies for not letting you know sooner... I've received about 400 applications for this search alone. I'm managing 3 searches at the moment.

400 applications! Yikes. Sadly, this is probably the case for each of the assistant professorships I applied to. The job market in my field is dismal enough as it is, but this year, with the bad economy, it's positively barren. I've already accepted the fact that most likely I won't get a job next year. :( It was a very hard reality to face, but I am learning to trust in God's timing and provision. I can only comfort myself with the knowledge that God's ways are not my ways, and that I believe there will be his goodness in this process even if there isn't a job at the end of it.
